I decided to investigate terms used to categorize Native Born Blacks living in the United States since the beginning of the transatlantic slave trade. Those terms are Negro (negro), Colored, Afro American, Black and African American.

Side Note: I made a conscious effort to leave out derogatory terms that promote racism and prejudice. That is not to say that these words are universally accepted terms to use in the description of brown and dark skinned people.

This work primarily deals with loss. It highlights the lost of one identity for another using terms primarily used within the past hundred and fifty years for Native Born Black Americans.
